Niin, eihän minulla tietenkään ole mitään Windows Media Playeria, sillä se on todellista roskaa. Mutta mikä onkaan YLE:n ratkaisu ongelmaani, kun ei ohjelma kuulu?

Toimiiko Windows Media Player muissa kuin Windows-koneissa?

Windows Medialle on olemassa rajoitettu Macintosh ja Unix (Solaris) -tuki. Windows Media Player on myös esiasennettuna Windows Mobile taskutietokoneissa. Windows Media on kuitenkin ensisijaisesti Windows-järjestelmissä toimiva formaatti ja esiasennettuna kaikissa Windows-versioissa Windows95:stä alkaen.
Miten toistan Windows Mediaa Mac OS X -käyttöjärjestelmässä?

Microsoftin oma Windows Media Player versio 9 on saatavilla Macintoshille. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx ).

Vaihtoehtoisena tapana Windows Media -tiedostojen toistamiseen Macintoshissa Microsoft suosittelee Flip4Mac -tuotetta (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx ) tai (http://www.flip4mac.com ).

Oikeasti. Ensimmäinen vaihtoehtoni on siis hankkia Windows Mobile taskutietokone. Toiseksi voin hankkia täyden Winukan. No tätä olen harkinnut mutta niin paljon en halua YLE:n arkistoradiota halua kuunnella, että viitsisin ja muut tarpeet ovat toistaiseksi olleet yhtä marginaalisia. Niin ja tuo Flip4Mac minulla on mutta sehän ei YLE:n yllä esittämästä huolimatta toiminut.

Suomen valtion radio siis on näin käytännössä mikkisoftan kannalla median julkistamisessa. Ei siinä mitään, kuten olen aiemmin todennutkin, minä käytän sitä mikä toimii, mutta Media Player in siinä määrin huono ohjelma, etten siihen lähde tämän takia. YLE ei todellakaan koe tässä mitään ongelmaa?

Päivitys edelliseen

Näköjään minäkin olen saanut niskaani Locumin kirouksen. Katsotaan pääseekö siitä eroon, mutta juuri nyt viimeisen tunnin ajan koneeni tehoista 80 % (molemmat prosessoriytimet) on kulunut roskakorin tyhjentämiseen. Nice!

Mac OsX Snow Leopard toistaiseksi

Päivitin 19.12. eli vähän yli viikko sitten tietokoneeni käytöjärjestelmän uusimpaan versioon 10.6. Snow Leopardiin. Osasin odottaa ongelmia, sillä olen tehnyt vastaavalla laitteistokokoonpanolla jo yhden siirtymän tiikeristä lepardiin. Tässä suhteessa en todellakaan pettynyt, valitettavasti.

Ensimmäisenä hajosi internetsoitto-ohjelma. Uusi versio löytyi Vodafonen sivuilta helposti ja on toiminut nyt 9 päivää varsin moitteettomasti, mitä nyt estää muiden ohjelmien käskemät järjestelmän uudelleenkäynnistyskomennot ollessaan päällä. Elisan sivuilta ei muuten mitään infoa löytynyt tuolla modeemimallilla (Huawei E220), mutta ohjelma itse tunnisti Elisan palveluntarjoajakseni, joten go figure.

Flashin kanssa on web-selaimissa ollut pientä kränää, mutta tähän en ole päässyt kiinni, katsotaan toistuuko, vai mitä.

Spotlightin indexointi on vähän tökkinyt, mutta muiden käyttäjien ilmoittamia massiivisia muistihukkia en ole yhtä lyhyttä tapausta lukematta kohdannut.

Guitar Pro tarvitsi uuden version, joka löytyi juurikin päivitettynä firman sivuilta (ilmaiset versiot maksaneille, rekisteröityneille käyttäjille). Vanha lumilepardia edeltänyt versio kaatui heti käynnistyksessä.

Sitten vähän sydämentykytyksiä: tänään aamulla yrittäessäni mennä Ylen Areenaan katsomaan Avara luontoa äänikorttini ei lähtenyt tulille. Ei, vaan kaatoi koko koneen. Harmaata ja uudelleen käynnistysohje (eli käsky painaa virtanappi pohjaan ja huolella). Ei hyvä. No sitten uudelleen kone raksuttamaan ja verkkoon. Laitailin RME:n sivuilta kaikkea kivaa, ja toinen lataamani driveri toi onnen takaisin Geneleceihin. Huh. Huomion arvoista on se, että vanhoilla ajureilla kaikki toimi viikon ihan hyvin, enkä siinä tehnyt mitään audioasetusmuutoksia. Todellakin go figure.

Kokonaisuutena täytyy todeta, että lumikissa on tuonut paljon tyhjää tilaa koneelle. Samalla se on tuonut outoa käytöstä ja ihmeellistä tökkimistä. OSa tästä varmaan johtuu ohjelmien vanhojen versioiden kanssa tulevista virheistä, mutta kokonaisuutena en vielä ole oikein saanut tähän uuteen pakettiin täyttä luottoa. Mikäli en olisi saanut äänikorttia muuten toimimaan, olisi tänään, heti ollut tiedossa paluu kloonin kautta vanhaan. Musan kanssa ei todellakaan leikitä.

iTunes Is Broken: Apple Fix It!

Untypically I'm writing in English. This is solely because I sincerely hope that someone in Apple Inc. reads this and then helps add momentum to fix the horrendous flaws that are generally referred to as iTunes.

First and foremost on my list of nuisances is the almost unusable randomization parameter activated by the little crossed in the bottom:


This bugger claims to play songs randomly, BUT DOES NOTHING OF THE SORT! iTunes seems to love picking up songs and then playing the hell out of them, just like Finnish commercial radio (this I guess goes for other folks as well). Seriously, I have a good bit of experience on how the damned "top of the pops filter" goes on overkill and starts pumping the same songs over and over and over...

When I have a modest collection of 8000 (and then some) songs, most of which are carefully selected for my pleasure, and when I have taken the time to evaluate most of these on the players five star chart (one of the more useful features), I would really appreciate that when I play the playlist of all the really good (5 stars) songs (currently 668 songs) all those songs get a chance. Instead the damn thing goes on a rut all the time and starts repeating certain songs. Why?

I guess this works for teenybobbers or diletants, but it sure doesn't work for me. It would be really helpful if I could go on and adjust the randomization parameters. Steve J. could keep his moronic repeater and I could play a really random set of songs.

Secondly I wanna talk about collection management. I recently swapped to a more effecient MBPro. No not one of those new unibodied slabs, but a late run of an earlier model as this had the features I really dig (2 firewire ports for both the external drives and the pro audio I/Os and a matte display, a must for a traveling man such as myself). With my old MBP I really had to store most of my music collection on a peripheral FW drive as I wasn't about to use 50 Gbs of a total of 120 for music.

Guess what? Whenever I used iTunes without the drive and did something stupid like program updates, attaching an iPod, playing the wrong list of songs, the information for certain songs would corrupt bringing forth an ugly little exclamation mark next to the song the app couldn't locate. Brilliant!


Now I know Adobe is a market leader for reasons, but how difficult it is to include some kind of drive management protocol for iTunes and similar programs that knows when a certain drive isn't attached and just shows this, and most importantly goes away when it sees the drive again? This works just fine in Photoshop Lightroom. Evidently you guys weren't thinking of users who have a lot of music, or what?

Thirdly a minor gripe. Earlier I could adjust the width of information columns on iTunes as I saw fit. Then came along v. 8, and lo, the column showing times played (in Finnish Soittokerrat) Couldn't be minimized anymore:


In the picture above you might notice this new feature? Now as I have a lot of music, I don't gather up repeats for any songs, but even if I did, four numbers would probably suffice more than well. Infact three might do it, I mean 999 times played? But no, I can't possibly optimize the field to any such width as iTunes won't allow anything that would compromize the full title bar of Soittokerrat to be shown.

Again minimizing these fields so that the titles become trunkaded might have perplexed some folks. I don't know, but for me it was paramount. As a former library worker (I'm not a librarian), I'm accustomed to having a lot of information on the screen. I can set up the order, so I know what's where. I never use the fancy Cover flows as they limit the amount of available information that I can use to order and filter things as I see fit. Now I could do this before, can I please do it again, Apple?

For all the nice stuff I can do with my MBP and the down right amazing quality of progs like Logic Pro 8 that I constantly use, iTunes is a pain in the &##. Cheers!

Macs were more secure than Windows machines, but the tables have turned. Macs are safer than PCs because they aren’t targeted as much, but the latest versions of OS X are “inherently less secure than the latest versions of Windows,” says Rich Mogull, the Mac security expert who provided tips this week.

A few years ago, OS X had an edge in security, thanks to a Unix foundation that meant some serious sorts of malware (but not all) could be blocked by a request to enter a password before installation. However, current vulnerabilities and attack methods mean that effectively “all the Unix protections can be circumvented,” Mr. Mogull says.

According to the Symantec researchers, the botnet has some sophisticated capabilities that suggest the work of an experienced programmer who may have rented out his creation to someone else who actually used it for denial-of-service attacks, a common pattern seen in botnets formed from Windows PCs.

Attackers created the botnet by seeding BitTorrent and other file-sharing sites with pirated software that contained a Trojan Horse. Some 20,000 Mac users had downloaded bad copies of Apple’s iWork 09 by the time Intego, a security software company that sells products for Macs, publicized its findings in January. Intego found a second version of the Trojan Horse a few days later inside copies of Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Mac.

HD video ja kalliit piuhat

Ostin hiljattain elämän kalleimman johdon, vaikka sain ihan mukavan 25 % alennuksen. Tarvitsin nimittäin piuhan tietokoneeni ja uuden tv:ni välille. Koska MacBookPro sylkee DVI-liitännästään jopa 1080:tä signaalia (jota oma 15,4" näyttö ei tosin tue), ja koska Braviassa taas on joukko HDMI-liitäntöjä vapaana, oli selvästi mahdollista (eli tarpeellista!) hoitaa siirto digitaalisesti.

Ei kun kauppaan...

Ja löytyihän se sieltä DVI-HDMI piuha, vain 65 €. Aziaa!

No tänään tein ensimmäisen testin proxy-telkkarilla, joka on tosin vain HD ready. Lähteenä on kovasti pakattu avi-tiedosto. Täytyy sanoa, että taas kerran alkujaan uskomattomalta tuntunut rahan käyttö kannatti. Pitkällisen läppärikatselun perusteella täytyy todeta, että signaali oli telkkarilla tuhottomasti parempi. Tottakai kamassa oli ne tyypilliset ongelmat, isot pinnat pahasti fragmentoituneita ja mustat suorastaan hirveitä, mutta tällainen tiivis video ei silti ole ikinä näyttänyt näin hyvältä.

No sitten ne huonommat asiat. Olen jo aiemmin huomannut, että se, miten videoulostulo suhtautuu osx:n Spacesiin, on vähintäänkin ongelmallista. Tämä testi vahvisti asian. Jos Spaces on päällä, ulostulo arpoo näyttötilan jonnekin erillisten mininäyttöjen välille, eli ei minnekään. Kun otin tilan pois päältä alkoi lyyli kirjoittaa ja sain kaksi näyttöä toimimaan niinkuin pitää, eli rinnakkaisina näyttölaitteina. No joo, ei mahda mitään.

Silti olen iloinen, sillä nyt ei tarvitse ostaa superkallista apple cinema näyttöä, vaan voin käyttää telkkaria hoitamaan homman!

Muuten, Applella ei ole myynnissä DVI-HDMI-muunninta. Nice going!
